Cat Exercise
How can my cat exercise without going outside?
My cat used to be an outdoors cat but since we moved to a busy road he now stays inside. He seems to be putting on weight and keeps begging for feed. Any ideas how to make him lose weight? Preferably without cutting down his food cause he doesn’t eat a lot anyway.
Thanks for being a responsible pet owner and keeping your cat indoors. Do you play with him? If not this can give him a bit of mental stimulation, it’s fun for both of you and of course it gives him a bit of exercise. Use lure toys that you can wave and he can bite, attack, grab.
But if he’s overweight it’s probably not so much lack of exercise as what you’re feeding him. I have four always only indoor cats and they’re all the perfect weight.
What you’re probably feeding him is a cheap dry food that’s made mostly of corn and contains little to no meat. Foods like this are LOADED with carbohydrates which leads to a fat cat. You’re also probably leaving the food out all day long – so he can nibble a bit even when he isn’t really hungry. Cats, like us, will eat out of boredom.
Switch to a healthier food with real meat as the main ingredient and little to no grain. Blue Buffalo Wilderness, Innova Evo, Petcurean Go! Natural are all 45-50% meat protein and grain free. Evo and Go! can be a bit hard to find – you need to find specialty pet stores. But Blue Buffalo Wilderness can be found at PetSmart – one of the few healthy brands they carry. Don’t leave the food out all day long – just give him a small handful twice a day.
Also give him canned food daily as an all dry diet isn’t healthy for cats no matter how good the food is. One of the smaller cans split into two servings per day should be plenty for him.

edit: “inhumane” and “unhealthy” to keep a cat indoors? LOL! It’s inhumane and unhealthy to let them free roam! Cats that free roam end up hit by cars, eaten by coyotes, catching diseases from other cats, attacked by loose dogs, picked up and sold to test labs or simply stolen. Cats are domestic pets – and have been for THOUSANDS of years. There’s nothing natural about letting them run loose.
